A word of Welcome
I welcome you to this site of the Department of Music Dance and Drama (MDD) of Makerere University. We are part of the Faculty of Arts. We are the heart beat of Makerere.
This site is still evolving and I am grateful to the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology Makerere University and particularly........and..... who have made it possible. I also appreciate the input of Mr. Alfdaniels Mivule Mabingo and Mr. Richard Kagolobya of MDD for coordinating the process.
We as MDD are committed to fulfilling our mandate in training and research in the area of performance on stage and now on screen. We are a pioneer Department in Research, Training and Teaching Performing Arts in Eastern Africa. Our Department has been the brooder of individuals and artists who have defined the motif of Uganda’s popular music score and choreographed Uganda’s performance space on page and on stage. Our Alumni have included Byron Kawadwa, Rose Mbowa (RIP), Abby Mukiibi, Kato Lubwama and Abu Kawenja of Kalisoliso fame –CBS FM, Alex Mukulu, Stephen Rwangyezi of Ndere, Philip Luswata of Theatre Factory, Fagil Mandy of FEMCON, ‘Bobi Wine’, and Harriet Nalubwama (Nakawunde). We are perhaps the only Department that has provided the largest number of artists employed by the radio industry and in the theatre and community development in Uganda.
We do not offer opportunities, but we offer you skills and capacity to create opportunities. This is possible through our programs. Many of our students have indicated that they chose to study theatre because of the components of film and Theatre for development in our courses. Others have been seduced by the possibility of developing careers in popular or classical Music. I am happy to let you know that we have now developed and will soon propose to the University new programs in Film and Television, Drama & Applied Theatre, Popular Music, Jazz & Improvisation, Gospel Music, Applied Dance (Dance in Health Education and Multimedia Entertainment).
We are moving and in very significant directions. We have entered the phase of giving our dreams legs. Our octopus of action is extending. We are developing a music archive and will soon have heaps of Uganda music repatriated.
What more, the University has identified the construction on a Performing Arts Centre and complex as one of its key priority areas for development. This positions us as the space to watch. The space to be! Welcome to the MDD narrative.
